The great pyramid of Giza (upper left) is the only surviving member of the ancient wonders of the world. It stands about 150 meters tall and was built for the Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) between 2589 and 2566 BC. It took over 20 years to build and was the world’s tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years.
The second pyramid (Centre pyramid in upper right and pyramid behing the Sphinx, lower left) and the Sphinx were built for Khafre (Chephren), Khufu’s son (or possibly brother) between 2558 and 2532 BC. It is smaller but on higher ground so, when viewed from a distance it appears larger. It is believed by Egyptologists that this was done purposely by the architects of the time.
The third and smallest of the three pyramids is of Khafre’s son Menkaura (Mycerinus) constructed between 2532 and 2503 BC.
After the Middle Kingdom diminished in power, grave sites were often robbed and the Giza area was abandoned for the Valley of the Kings. |
