Rio de Janeiro

19% of Rio's population live in favelas like the one on the left. In Portuguese, favela means shanty town, however many house not only the poor but large groups of rival drug gangs. Almost all favelas are located on the hills in or around Rio.

In contrast to the favelas are the pristine beaches such as the Copacabana, which is also the name of one of Rio's boroughs. About 160,000 people live in Copacabana.
